Classes - Sycamore

Sycamore Logo

Sycamore class is a lively Year 1 class.  We have moved classrooms so that we are close to Oak class and to the infant toilets.

We have just come out of the Foundation Stage and are moving in to Key Stage 1.  Foundation Stage is very active and we are expected to be ’on the move’ for most of the day.  By the end of Key Stage 1 we will have learned to sit down and work at tables for a lot of the day.

Up until Christmas 2009 we are in a ’transition period’.  Some of us are ready to sit at tables and work for quite a lot of the time and we are doing this.  Some of us are not quite so ready and Miss Pope is being very clever planning things so that all of us are having the provision we need.

We are learning our sounds through ’Letters and Sounds’ and we do this every day.  We are learning to read and we all know which colour of book we are reading and our teacher works with us in groups to help us to learn new reading skills.  It is really important that we can talk about the story and answer questions so we have to look at all the picture clues as well as the words!  We should be taking books home to read with our parents and bringing them back each day.  We can borrow extra books too, not just the colour ones we are learning with.  We love to listen to stories and to share books with our families.

We do quite a lot of writing in school too.  We are learning to write our letters correctly in handwriting and to write sentences.  We also have a chance to write our own ideas and down.  When we do this we sometimes forget ot put in finger spaces and to remember our spellings!  There is so much to remember with writing that we like to do different types of writing so that we can build our confidence!

Every day we do Numeracy.  We are learning to count up and back and lots of other things.  Our teacher plans our Numeracy using the National Strategy for Numeracy Year 1.  You might see our groups doing different things and this is because we need to do different activities because we don’t all need to practise the same things as each other.

We love to sing and do PE.  We are great singers and active children and every day we get the opportunity to enjoy these things.  We also love to do project work.  You will see from the plan that this term we are doing science about materials but our teachers have cleverly designed a project about cooking so that we learn the science thorugh intersting and every day skills.  This will help us to put it in context and remember it in the future.

Sadly, Mrs Rogers, our class learning assistant has been away since September because she has not been well.  We are lucky to have had Mrs Shearing instead and we are very grateful to her for being with us.

Our Class Link Governor is Tracie Geddie.

We are delighted to welcome Miss Helen Pope to our staff team.  It is particularly exciting to be re-opening Sycamore class which went missing in September 2003 when the number of pupils on the school roll fell.  We now have a very thriving Infant department and have been able to add in a new class.  Miss Pope is young and enthusiastic and trained to teach this age group of children.

Miss Pope recently completed her teacher training and then spent a very valuable year supply teaching in Bristol and travelling.  During her travels she visited schools in New Zealand to look at their systems of education and see what she could learn from them.  Her supply days in Bristol were enormously helpful in providing her with a broad range of experiences in the classroom and lots of ideas for behaviour management!  The childen enjoy the work they are given and show enthusiasm about coming to school.
